Queensland Theme Park Holiday

Flights from Melbourne to the Gold Coast

Booking direct, we found fabulous flights on Jetstar to the Gold Coast from Melbourne. Getting away from the wet spring weather to where the sun is hopefully shining every day is a popular holiday plan for Victorians!

The booking process was quick and simple. For under $650 we had return tickets to Coolangatta for a family of 4 – ridiculously cheap. This was booking about 2 months in advance, to fly up during school holidays.

Driving from Victoria to Queensland

Driving directly to the Gold Coast can be done in two days quite easily. As an alternative, follow the coast road via Sydney

The well-known East Coast road trip extends from south-eastern Australia all the way to far north Queensland, a visit to theme parks along the way will keep children very happy!

Dream World Passes

The kids love Dreamworld and White Water World, both are within the same park and gallivanting between the two is as simple as can be. It has been about 7 years since we first went and is time to get back. The kids were only quite small on the first trip and are now of an age where they can go on every ride. Yeah.

Buying passes is simple and whilst it can be done on arrival, it is better to find the best deals beforehand. We have opted for the Annual Season Pass which includes unlimited entry to the parks as well as the Skypoint Observation Deck for 6 months. Priced on special offer at $74 each, it is a great option and was a limited time offer.

The Gold Coast Attractions Pass is also a great value way to enjoy even more of the famous attractions… read more.

Accommodation on the Gold Coast

This has to be the most time-consuming part of the whole adventure. I had a vision of finding somewhere perfect within walking distance of the park, if our budget had extended to paying thousands of dollars for a one week stay – it would have been easy!

After trawling through many accommodation options and then checking customer reviews we settled on Champelli Palms Apartments near what is known as The Broad Water. Costing just under $900 for a family of 4 over 7 nights, it was a great price.

Champelli Palms is a couple of blocks from the waterfront, it’s a 20-minute drive to Dream World and about 10 minutes to drive down the hub-bub of Surfers Paradise. Each apartment has a balcony with many overlooking the pool.

SkyPoint Observation Deck

The views from the 77th floor of the observation deck are stunning. Looking up and down the coast and over the centre of Surfers Paradise. Displays of local history are well worth a read and a coffee or something more from the cafe is wonderful.

Make the most of a pass and see the coastline and city by day and night. Book tickets here.

Snorkelling with Green Turtles

The Gold Coast is not a place that is generally thought of as a snorkelling destination, but Cook Island, not too far from shore provides a wonderful experience with green turtles as well as clownfish and more…

We joined Water Sports Guru for a small group snorkelling trip for 3 hours. The company also provides for Stand Up Paddle Boarding and kayaking.

Whale Watching

The Gold Coast is well-known as a Whale Watching mecca. Tours go out regularly during the season from June till November. Read more about whale sightings and booking tours.

Gold Coast 4WD Eco Outback Tracks Tour

Getaway from the hustle and bustle of the Gold Coast and head for the hills on an Eco-Tour perhaps. Visit waterfalls and the lush rainforest, not too far from the coast, but a world away…

So many options!

Along with Theme Parks, Sanctuaries and water sports the Gold Coast offers a huge array of fun activities. Check out more adventures here.

  1. This looks amazing! I wish I would have spent more time on the Gold Coast when I was there a few years ago. I just stopped by for a couple of hours, I would have loved to see some whales 😀
